I'm too lazy to post a screen grab tonight, but I believe the gravestone for Jin showed his date of death as the date of the flight of Oceanic 815, so chances are he's still on the island, just not one of the Oceanic Six.

2. In season three the only reason we have for why Charlie shut the hatch and killed himself rather than just hopping out in time to save himself is that Desmond told him he needed to die to assure that his vision of Claire and the baby getting on the helicopter came true. So at some point we better see Claire and that baby getting on a helicopter, that's all I'm saying.

3. Also from season three - after being with Ben's folks for three months, Juliette is shown failing to save a woman on the operating table. Ethan is there and seems upset that she let the woman die. Goodman is there too, and he says some reassuring words to Juliette. My question is, why is the guy from the chemical plant standing in on a life-and-death surgery? That dog don't hunt.

4. Again, I'm too lazy to do it tonight, but I want a closer look at that note that says "don't trust the captain" in all block letters. And I want to have another look at the woman who reads books upside down - I'm guessing since she got a name we haven't seen the last of her.

5. Desmond is a moron. He had a chance to marry Penny, but chickens out when her dad snubs him. So he joins the army. Then he has another chance to win her back, but decides instead to get into shape so he can get in a boat race. Does he want to marry Penny or her dad? I wouldn't let him drink my scotch either.

Okay, i lied; that was five things. Second lie: I was born on this island.

4 8 15 16 23 42

Tempest in a Tea Kettle

Enjoying season four as much as any since the first, and last night’s episode didn’t disappoint. Let’s start with our first shot of Juliet swimming in the surf! Yee-haw. I know I ain’t the only one who’s been waiting for that. I’ll put aside my skepticism regarding how one has a “private” relationship while living in a camp with maybe 30 houses. Yeah, they were found out, but still…Bigger questions—Apparently, the Tempest station provides power to the island, but is also serves as a means of gassing the whole place. Why would that capacity exist in the first place? Is this how the Purge happened when Ben and Richard killed everyone off? Ben’s father, at least, was killed by a small canister in the microbus. And where is Richard, anyway? Didn’t he and the rest of the Others head to the “Temple?” Where dat?

So Charlotte Lewis and Daniel Faraday head to the Tempest to to stop Ben from gassing everyone, or to gas everyone themselves. If they were going to stop Ben, how did they know it was happening in the first place? If Ben was telling the truth, then how did he get word to Harper, who seemed to appear and disappear with uncanny ease, swirling the whispers around with her as she came and went? And why send someone that Juliet might inherently distrust?

We talked last night after it was over that it just seems trite that Ben would have his panties in a bunch over an unattainable woman. Again, if the island offers a route to enlightenment, shouldn’t he be able to rise above such earthly concerns? Or maybe he isn’t really enlightened. Maybe Juliet herself is tapped into the island consciousness, but just doesn’t know it. Is this what Ben sees in her, and thus wants to control her? Maybe he’s just sore that he missed the bikini beach party with Goodwin. I would be.

We also find out that Penny’s dad is interested in finding the island so he can exploit its fountain of youth qualities. Or that’s what Ben says to Locke. I take what Ben says with a grain of salt as a rule, but Locke doesn’t, and he gives Ben a load of laundry and keys to his own house. I don’t know. Maybe Widmore does want to market the island, but that doesn’t necessarily explain how his daughter’s boyfriend got stranded there after jogging with Jack at a stadium, and after getting a boat from Libby, who was in the funny farm with Hurley, whose life seems to be connected with these odd numbers below, which were really important a long time ago….

4 8 15 16 23 42

Ben Again

After Thursday night's Lost I happened to watch an earlier episode from season two which had a certain resonance. It's the one where (among other things) Jack and Locke are keeping a man Rousseau trapped in the jungle who claims to be a survivor from a hot-air balloon crash - Henry Gale. But right away we know something's not up with Henry, as from the start he begins to successfully probe Locke, figuring out what makes him tick and how to push his buttons. It only takes a short discussion of Hemingway and Dostoevsky for Henry to get under Locke's skin:

Are you the genius, or are you the guy who always feels like he's living in the shadow of the genius?

I just don't understand why you let the doctor call the shots.

Losing his cool, Locke comes out of the hatch and throws a mini-tantrum, scattering dishes from the kitchen counter, and Henry knows he's found an entrance.

Fast forward to the recent episode, and lo and behold, Ben is once more playing Locke like a fiddle. If I hadn't already completely lost all sympathy for Locke at this point I'd feel a little sorry for him - he's so clearly overmatched. Locke attempts to repeat their earlier literary sparring when Ben dismisses the book he's brought for him, PKD's Valis. "I've already read it," says Ben, tossing it aside. "You might catch something you missed the second time around," says Locke. At which point, Ben sums the situation up nicely:

Ben: I feel for you john, I really do. You keep hitting dead ends. You couldn't find the cabin, you can't make contact with Jacob; you're so desperate to figure out what to do next you're even asking ME for help. So here we are, just like old times. Except I'm locked in a different room. And you're more lost than you ever were.

Locke: I know what you're trying to do. It's not gonna work.

Ben: Excellent john, you're evolving.

At which point Locke retreats to once more have a little tantrum, throwing the tray against the wall (again, within earshot of Ben, who silently gloats in satisfaction).

Oh, and here's a shot of Kate apparently before she started having a problem with the idea of holding babies:

And here's a shot of Libby, just cause I liked Libby.

We also learned that Ben has access to $3.2 million, and that Ghostbuster wants it. And Kate slept with Sawyer again, but not in the biblical sense.

4 8 15 16 23 42

lost week

i guess you could say i LOST a week here. (that's for David, who will probably never read it).

So... first off, upon re-watching the first ep of season 4 I realize that several islanders stuck around with Kate and Jack to meet the "rescuers". For some reason I thought there were just 4 folks.

First responses to s4ep2: I liked it. I think the new characters are interesting, and I'm curious to find out more about creepy guy who visited Hurley. He tells Naomi that everyone on the mission has been chosen for a particular reason (Spanking the Monkey guy: because he cried at the fake footage of the plane. Drunken pilot, because he could tell the footage was fake. Sassy Brit, because, well, I don't know but she found a Dharma collar on a polar bear in the desert. And the bad guy from Rush Hour, obviously because he can talk to the dead). (And yes, the footage is fake. Don't ask me how I know, I just feel it. Just pretend we're on the island and I'm not telling you because telling you makes too much sense and would make it easier to figure out what's going on, so of course I'm not going to tell anyone).

Also - rewatching Hurley and the cabin from s4ep1 I'd forgotten that he willed the cabin away, and it was gone - just like he did with Charlie. Maybe the big H is tuned into things somehow?

Anyhoo - so now we've got the creepy black guy who's trying to find Ben. Good stuff. Hurly is haunted by Charlie and a creepy guy who claims to be from Oceanic, who asks him "are they still alive?" Jack is concerned that H might be ready to reveal a secret. Later (the stuff from the last ep of season 3) Jack grows a beard and is despondent, wishing for some way to return to the island, while Kate isn't interested.

as i recall it...

charlie kills the signal scrambler and contacts penny. penny says she doesn't know anyone named naomi or know about a boat. charlie passes this on to des, then dies.

naomi gets a signal, then locke throws a knife in her back. despite jack's training, he misses the fact that naomi is very much alive and decides to leave her laying on the ground with a hunting knife sticking out of her back. later she apparently tells her people to rescue the islanders despite their treatment of her.

upon learning of charlie's last message, hurly is convinced that "the rescuers" aren't to be trusted. he gets separated from the islanders (soon after sawyer tries to comfort him) and runs into Jacob's cabin. then Locke feeds him the line about charlie's death being wasted unless everyone listens to Locke.

back together, most everyone agrees to go with Locke rather than wait for their rescue. Jack, Kate, Rose, Bernard stick behind.

then there's a blank space - we don't know what happens until Jack fixes himself a vodka cocktail while watching hurley running from cops in his dad's camero. and we learn that hurley is freaking out because his dead friend Charley is talking to him.

Hmmmmm...

4 8 15 16 23 42

They have already returned

From what I can tell, Hugo (Hurley) is remembering his past during his time in the mental institute. I'm still catching up, so please, no spoilers.

4 8 15 16 23 42

Lost vs. Sopranos

I don't know how many of you Lost fans out there are also Sopranos watchers but here's an interesting link from CNN.com

4 8 15 16 23 42

Looking Glass

Meant to post these before now, when everyone's probably already seen the next episode, but here's a couple shots from inside the Looking Glass station.

<img style="display:block; And how nice to see someone on the island act like they actually want to find out what's going on. Locke goes farther than anyone so far towards forcing some answers out of Ben. Speaking of Ben, he's apparently a mass-murderer with parent issues and a missing childhood girlfriend (who's surely going to show up later on). And Richard and the rest of the "natives/hostiles" are the ones who killed off the Dharma Initiative project, possibly leaving Desmond's hatch-mate stranded.

There's more going on here, obviously, but this post has been sitting in draft form all week, so I'm just going to post.

4 8 15 16 23 42

Thanks for posting, Spab. I've neglected this page for too long; sorry about that. In lieu of excuses I'll try to cover everything I've missed in this post.

Okay, I'm not gonna do that, but I do want to mention that at the beginning of this season there was a summary show that had a couple little "easter eggs" i hadn't noticed before. When Hurley was scootering through the airport he passed a kid's soccer team with the "numbers" (4 8 15 16 23 42) on their uniforms. And, more interestingly, when Hurley was going through foodstuffs in the hatch pantry one of the boxes had a "lost kid" ad on the side with Will's picture on it. What's up with that?

Which would be interesting to discuss if I hadn't given up on trying to figure out Lost. I still watch it, and I still enjoy it, but I don't give it the benefit of the doubt anymore. That's okay, I'm not trying to tear the show down, I'm just saying that I don't expect to be bowled over by the "reveal" when this is all over. I've been feeling this way for the past few episodes, but the 5/2/07 episode brought it all home for me.

I'm getting ahead of myself. I took a couple screen grabs from the "monk" episode to point out that the flower lady from Desmond's past knows the monk who kicks him out of the monastery so he can meet Penny.

Whatever that means.

"The Brig" episode was good, I guess. Good in that it gave us some meaty things to mull over about "the big picture" (and yes, I plan on using a lot of "quotes" in this post). When Kate tells Jack & Jules about the new gal, Juliette wants to tell Kate something but Jack doesn't think it's time yet. What, does Jack "know" -- that they're really "dead" now? And the new gal (did she get a name yet? update: Naomi) says bodies were seen on the crashed plane, sunk in the ocean. I'm with Sayid, taking what she has to say with a grain of salt. Reeks of red herring to me. But I like salty fish.

Also of interest, Ben claims that Locke brought his father to the island because he hasn't worked through his problems with him (or something like that). Locke certainly has some father issues, but what kind of therapist advocates murder to promote personal growth? I'll tell you what kind: psychopathic. Just as we've learned that the islanders are all emotionally incapable of trusting each other and acting rationally, now we also learn (maybe re-learn?) that the others are the kind of freaky, annoying know-it-alls who would put you through all kinds of crap because they think it'll be good for you in the long run. When they're all gathered around watching Locke do the proper thing, i.e., refusing to murder his father, I was wondering just who is this murderous gang of thugs and why should Locke want to pass any test they might give him. Screw them.

I guess we shouldn't be surprised at this point that Sawyer's con-man turns out to be Locke's dad, since everyone seems to be related somehow. For what it's worth, I didn't buy for a second that Locke really had Ben locked up. The fact that Ben seems to be recovering and Locke heals quickly seems to say that the island has mystical healing powers of some kind. Same with the return of Patchy the Russian (named after everyone's favorite anarchist, Bakunin). But if that's the case, what happened to Colleen? And why do pregnant ladies all die?

In a previous episode Sayid gets to have his "lost" moment, i.e., that moment when someone has a chance to ask some pertinent questions and instead decides to be a frustrating (to the viewer) moron. For example, when Jack sees the tail-y stewardess he refuses to ask her anything interesting and instead insists on yelling at her to go away. Brilliant strategy, Sherlock. Similarly, Sayid gets alone with Juliette and even spells out all the interesting things he could ask her, but first says he wants to know trivia about her past (and never gets back to asking the important stuff). Since this happens all the time I can only assume that the real mystical power of the island is to destroy rational thought. Except that it's probably just bad writing. Which is a drag, and which makes the show less compelling. But like I said, I'm still watching.

I want to know what was going on in the Clockwork Orange room. And I want an episode with Alex and Rousseau backstories. And I want to know what that column was that Locke's dad was tied to - built by the same folks who built the four-toed foot?

4 8 15 16 23 42

The Undead?

So what gives, the Russian is alive, and the injured woman that fell out of the sky said that everyone on their flight was found dead? I didn't. Oh well. It's one of those movies where I had to read between the lines a bit to see what's really going on, which was cool, but ultimately it fell short of it's potential.

See, it takes place sometime after the current timeline of Veronica Mars. How do I know? VM is currently in her freshman year on the TV show this season. In Pulse, she seems to have transferred from Neptune to some campus which only has shades of blue and grey, kinda like Neo's apartment in the Matrix, except for when people put up red duct tape. She's there with a cast of familiar faces -- that guy from Freaks and Geeks, that guy from Old School, and yummy Christina Milian:

She (Veronica) runs into trouble when her loner ex-boyfriend stops returning her calls (thereby proving the presence of foul play, since no one in their right mind would diss Veronica Mars, not after seeing what's she's capable of in a rough town like Deadwood). Turns out he's a hacker, and he's stolen a nasty virus-type thing from some college students working on a way to access previously untapped spectrum for mega-broadband. Turns out this untapped spectrum is where hordes of ethereal scary people live, and they all want to suck out your will to live (for reasons unclear to me). Turns out they can only get to you via electronic gear like cell phones, computers and wifi. And it turns out they can be blocked via the high tech solution you're probably already guessing: red duct tape.

Okay, this movie could have been the next Hackers (i.e., a guilty pleasure), but it takes itself too seriously while simultaneously proposing such a stupid, go-nowhere plot. Why not get at least one person who knows anything about networks to take a look at the script and at least get it to pass the laugh test? Why not show some actual hacking? Why the need to insult the viewer by telling us that these beings travel via the electromagnetic spectrum, but still allow the protagonists to outrun them? "Don't look at them!!" You know, cause our eyes are the pathway to the electromagnetic soul....

Sigh. So Veronica's boyfriend ends up missing, she keeps getting scary emails from him, she figures his computer is still on somewhere, sending spam, so she tracks down the guy who bought it and ... it's Boone!!

So I guess when he died on the island he came back to life at this dreary college and now spends his time working on his car and playing with computers he's bought second hand (and apparently he's found a gym -- look at those pipes!). I for one am glad to see he's keeping himself busy, even if he's got some silly b-movie horror in his future.

4 8 15 16 23 42

Heroes?

In the LOST down-time I've been kicking around the idea of talking about other shows here to fill the space. Not that I've had a lot of time for blogging lately, but I've been watching Heroes too and thought we might want to open things up a bit. Then again, maybe not. In any event, I recently watched Brick, a nicely executed high school noir which succeeds in my mind because it focuses on being true to the noir genre rather than being a realistic portrayal of high school. Oh, we still see the occasional parent or school administrator, but mostly we see a gutsy but troubled protag who's wrestling with the unsolved murder of the object of his unrequited past love, forcing him to risk entanglement with the unsavory local drug world in order to discover what happened and who's responsible. Recommended. And look who's in it:

That's right, that's Claire. Apparently before she moved to Australia and developed her Aussie accent, she was a troubled teen-ager in the US. And who else is Brick? Take a look:

That's right, it's the mysteriously persuasive elfin cutie from Heroes! Hmmm, so there's a Heroes-Lost connection here after all... Now to find a Veronica Mars cross-over...

In case you missed it, JSparkle passes along this interesting wrap-up of 50 Lost Loose Ends: http://tv.ign.com/articles/745/745595p1.html?=lle

4 8 15 16 23 42

Hanson Hanso Guy on Grey's Anatomy

Season Two, Episode Five, "Bring the Pain"

<img style="display:block; John 3:05 (New International Version)

Well let's see. Does this change everything?

We see a 50's-style Kate hooking up with the captain of Firefly-class starship, Serenity. We see Jack digesting the options available to him after Juliette's attempt to win him over, and playing hardball with Ben. We see Danny's growing frustration with Coleen's death and taking it out on Sawyer (why isn't he just as mad at Kate?). And we see Locke dealing with Eko's death.

I'm too tired tonight to give a full blown recap, so here's some interesting nuggets.

Kate inexplicably drugs her husband. Why? Chances are he's going to wake up alone. I thought this backstory was pretty worthless. I assume it was to give us some background on how Kate falls for guys, laying the groundwork for her to sleep with Sawyer &tc.

Juliette (and presumably Ben) try to use Kate to convince Jack to operate on Ben. This doesn't really make sense to me. More importantly, who unlocked Jack's cell so he could see Sawyer and Kate together after the initial failed attempt at manipulation? I figured it was Juliette's voice telling Jack the door was unlocked, but then Ben is the one who shows up. What did they expect Jack to do when he saw Jules with Sawyer? Idunno.

Once Ben's in surgery Danny and his nameless sidekick head off to kill Sawyer. Danny: "Ben just put his life in one of their hands; Shepard wasn't even on Jacob's list." Who's Jacob? My first thought was that he was either Goodwin or Ethan, the two guys sent by Ben to get names of the crash survivors, but I'm not so sure. Maybe he's a new character we haven't yet met. What list? A list of folks on the plane? A list of survivors? We shall see...

I gotta say, I liked Jack's gambit. Screw Ben, and screw Juliette and her supposed offer. Lost has gone deep into bad soap-opera territory, with the others ostensibly having some justification for being such jerks; it's hard to conceive of any such explanation. For instance, what if the others have previously been manipulated by enemies pretending to be airplane crash victims? Well, at this point who cares. But that said, I liked Jack's tactic to take command of the situation.

That story Jack told Kate on the beach? It was the time he got scared and counted to 10 to calm down, right? I don't know why the others couldn't just drop Kate in a cell somewhere and threaten to kill sawyer if she doesn't give Jack what she wants, but we'll see what happens. Jack doesn't know they're on a second island, but even so, what good is a one-hour lead time? The others didn't need an hour to capture your sorry bumpkiss, Jack. Since coming on the island Kate's primary skill has been to end up as a hostage, so what makes him think she'll be able to get away now?

Okay, let's cut to the chase: the meat of the episode for me (after Jack growing balls, pardon my <s>French</s> Midwestern) was Alex. Is she a loose cannon now? It sounds like she "escaped" at some point. She snuck up on Kate earlier to tell her that Kate was wearing her dress, and now she's "breaching the compound" to slingshot suckers and complain about her lost boyfriend. Alex doesn't strike me as a brain trust (what did she think would happen?), and I don't trust her, but I give the LOST writers even less credit at this point, so I doubt she's an agent with an elaborate ploy to deceive anyone. I take her at face value: she's a disgruntled youngster.

Flashback to Rouseau (too lazy to get the real spelling); she said she came to the island with a boatload of people, they all went crazy so she had to kill them. Hmmm. Sounds to me like maybe she had a disagreement with her companions, maybe she's the one who "went crazy". But who knows? Maybe her companions became the others?

Finally: why was Sawyer such a milktoast? Ostensibly because he figures if he's a total pushover then Kate might be spared, right? Sounds like faulty logic to me. He never bothered to tell her about their location (useful info), never mentioned to her that they're under surveillance (why not tell her? why have sex on camera?). But I"m not going to complain about the writing of the show, I'm just venting a bit.

I gotta say, I don't really mind that the next episode is three months away.

4 8 15 16 23 42
